Hello!
I’m a student at the University of Southern California studying linguistics. I grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland and now reside in sunny Los Angeles. Here are some of my passions:
‍
Thanks for stopping by -- feel free to drop a line! [phoolsom@usc.edu]
Building a computational model that, given minimal speech data from a language, would be able to learn the language's phonological, morphological, and syntactic rules. If accomplished, would expedite the process of documenting rapidly dying endangered languages.
Skills: Python, IPA transcription, chart parsing and basic machine learning

Read MoreDesigning experiments, developing animations, and running semantics studies with child and adult subjects to figure out the acquisition and perception of conditional words, comparative words, and more.
Skills: p5.js, jsPsych, HTML/CSS, MTurk, Firebase, keeping children happy
Mudd Hall of Philosophy, USC University Park Campus
Lab WebsiteInspired by my experiences in A cappella, I wanted to investigate the science behind beatboxing processes. I'm conducting independent research with USC PhD student, Reed Blaylock, on the art of singing and beatboxing at the same time: beat-rhyming by parsing audio data for phonological patterns.
Skills: data collection, IPA and beatboxing transcription on Praat, enjoying good music

What's Beatrhyming?As a Fellow,
I'm scouting for immigrant founders of early stage start-ups at USC and in the LA eco-system. I also research the competitive landscape of relevant markets for start-ups in consideration.

I helped organize Break to Make, an all women-identifying hardware makeathon. In Fall 2018, the two-day event was held at The Reef in downtown Los Angeles, and makers from high schools and universities came to build. breaktomake.com
I'm also currently on a team that's building an entrepreneurship program and grant for low-income students to launch their own ventures over a summer.
SparkSC's goal is to encourage students of all backgrounds to pursue entrepreneurship.
As an Outreach and Recruitment Intern for Asians for Miracle Matches (A3M), I edited promotional videos of marrow donor experiences and testimonies to combat stigmas and misconceptions that the Asian American community holds about marrow donation. I also managed social media content and worked with community leaders to recruit donors. Diversifying the national marrow registry is critical for saving the lives of people of different ethnicities, as finding a marrow match is more likely within the same race group. a3mhope.org
As a Democracy Summer Intern for (my amazing) Congressman Jamie Raskin, I worked for his re-election campaign and conducted tax policy research. My writings on the findings were published on the campaign website, and I aided in phone banking, canvassing, and other grass roots campaign methods. While you're here, go check out his website (he's still very much in office). jamieraskin.com
As the President of the Montgomery County Regional Student Government (MCR-SGA), I oversaw a student advocacy organization of over 50 executive board members, representing the 47,138 high school students and 159,022 total students in Montgomery County Public Schools through local and state government policy, and I led monthly assemblies of over 200 students.
During my term, we wrote, lobbied hard for, and passed state legislation to increase the teaching of mental health in health class curriculums. We fought for more ESOL teachers and counselors, testified on the fiscal budget to increase funding for major infrastructure improvements, and worked to support students of all backgrounds. That's just the tip of the iceberg. mcrsga.com
I'm the Co-Director for the Global Women's Narrative Project. This initiative was launched through the Oxford Initiative for Global Ethics and Human Rights to document the diverse narratives of women around the world, in order to shed light on how women contribute to society and offer incredible perspectives. oxfordglobalethics.org/global-womens-narratives-project

I founded a handmade organic lip balm business: Iono Gives.
I make balms with raw ingredients and different scents in my kitchen, designed the branding and packaging, and I donate all of the profits by buying school supplies and other supplies necessary for Thai students in need. If buying an acai berry scented or perhaps a kahlua scented organic lip balm interests you, prepare to moisturize yourself and do good! To date, I've donated over $5,000 to various Thai schools and orphanages. You can read donation details and the brand concept here -- ionogives.com
I've won the C-SPAN StudentCam National Documentary Contest twice, the first time with one friend and the second time with two.
"Illegal Immigrants and their Education," was an Honorary Mention in 2013 about the Maryland DREAM Act.
"SNAP To It, America," was a 2nd Place winner in 2015 about the federal food stamps program.
Both edited on Final Cut Pro.
